Emily Boschert Cooper, MPH, MOM, LAc

Meet Emily

I share my surname (Boschert) with my Maternal Grandmother, a name that is unaccidentaly composed of the ancient Germaic elements "fierce, wild, angry, hardy, strong and brave". I am grateful for the qualities I inherited from this woman, and for the hardships these qualities empowered me to navigate. And all along, I was learning how to navigate pain and suffering with my clients, as they move through their own infinitely nuanced and unique human experience, teaching them to understand how our body's reflect our experiences, our stories, and our varied pain. And so, my primary responsibility as a practitioner is to hold a compassionate and fierce space for the client by recognizing, cultivating and encouraging the human potential to create health, and the individual's own ability to sustain it - physically and emotionally. In this way, I unapologetically live up to my namesake.

As a classically trained Chinese Medicine pracitioner (Acupuncturist and Herbalist) with over 15 years of experience, I support the body in the myriad ways disharmony may present itself (see a thorough (but not exhaustive) list here) from acute inury and pain to allergies, from insomnia to seizures to substance abuse, anxiety or depression, Autoimmune disease to respiratory infections, chronic fatigue to gut and microbiome pathologies, infertility to gynocological and menopausel disharmonies - and so on. However, over the years, my practice has evolved a special emphasis on chronic illness and pain, chronic stress, mental health and trauma.

I utilize all Acupuncture channel systems: primary, the eight extraordinary, luo, sinew, and the divergent, as well as Chinese Herbal Medicine, and nutritional therapy. I incorporate moxibustion, gua sha, cupping, acupressure and other techniques long practiced within the 5,000 year old art of Classical Chinese Acupuncture. Through these modalities, the development of self awareness contributes to the physiology of healing and the client's ability to move beyond the management of symptoms to sustainable health. I am daily astonished by the remarkable responsivity of a person to the healing message - seemingly completely lost, in excruciating emotional or physical pain - the body does not fail to Remember health.

I first visited Maine in the womb, and with that, a lifelong love was born. Some forty years later, I moved to Mount Desert Island. With my own hands, alongside several incredible local craftspeople (healers in their own right), I built my home and my Acupuncture practice studio. Nestled in the woods of Bass Harbor, I live with my greatest Teacher - a Belgian/German Shepherd rescue, who is also gentle but fierce.

Emily Boschert Cooper, MPH, MAc, L.Ac

I started my career in Public Health, with a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Maryland, and then a Master of Oriental Medicine degree (Master of Acupuncture and Master of Chinese Herbal Medicine) from the Maryland University of Integrative Health, a Western pioneer in the transmission of Chinese Medicine to the United States.

I am a board certified Licensed Acupuncturist in Maine and Washington DC and am certified as a Diplomate of Acupuncture by the NCCAOM. I hold Maine and Washington DC licensure for custom Chinese herbal formulation and am a certified Acu Detox Specialist in the trauma protocol established by the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association, utilized most frequently in group treatment sessions.

Transitioning into Chinese Medicine from the field of Epidemiology and International Public Health, my previous experience includes work with high risk trauma populations in the United States and East Africa. Throughout my training as a Chinese Medicine practitioner I continued public health work with University of Maryland's Shock Trauma, UMD Center for Integrative Medicine, and Johns Hopkins University, all experiences that deepened my understanding of how health, and lack of health, is informed by factors at the individual, familial, community and environmental level.

As an infectious disease epidemiologist, I acted primarily as an on-the-ground community health program manager and qualitative researcher in domestic and international settings of devastating health disparities. My field relationships developed from a humility, respect, and open hearted curiosity for the perspectives and experiences that contribute to a human's condition. In my work now, as an Acupuncturist, I strive towards an active practice of deep listening and inquiry into the personal insight one has about their own state of Being, allowing me to be fully present with those I care for, encouraging folks to grow fully present to themselves as well.
